Close to 200 runners hit the streets of St. Albans
|
Saturday, July 4, 1998 -- St. Albans
Kanawha-Coal Riverfest 5K Run
The sun came out Saturday morning, July 4th, for a great crowd of 177 runners at
the Kanawha-Coal Riverfest 5K run in St. Albans. The course was a very flat and
fast run through the streets of St. Albans.

Kevin Williams takes the win in 4th of July fashion
|
The men's race got of to a very fast start, but not everyone could
maintain the brutal pace. As the front runners began to separate
themselves, the young guns moved out in front with 22-year-old Kevin
Williams and 15-year-old Sean Greene leading the way. Around the 2
mile point in the race, Kevin decided that he did not want the race to
come down to a sprint finish. Sean had beaten Kevin in a previous race
when it came to a sprint finish. So with about a mile to go, Kevin
made his move to put some distance on his rival. The strategy proved
successful as Sean was never able to close the gap. Kevin finished
first in a time of 15:57 with Sean crossing the line second in 15:15.
Both these times were PRs for the racers. Taking third place in the
men's division was another set of young legs in 17-year-old Mike Guinn
posting a time of 16:36. The men's masters champion for the day was
Glenn Baldwin with a nice time of 15:56.

1st place female, Connie Young, shows a few men the way to the finish
|
The women's competition was dominated by Connie Young and Kim Trenbath.
The race saw Kim jump out to an early lead, however Connie was able to
catch the younger racer around the 1 mile mark. The two ladies played
cat and mouse for the middle portions of the race as Kim did her best
to stay out in front. Finally, with less than a mile to go, Connie
was able to make her move to gain the lead. Connie held a slim lead
to the finish with a time of 19:01. Kim crossed the line just seconds
behind in 19:08. The next woman to cross the line was Connie Maraville,
a minute back from the leaders, in a time of 20:03. The women's masters
champion for the day was Sherry Deegan in a time of 22:35.
