Talk about flat, the 5k course in Wellsburg, WV, was that and more. In
addition to being certified, the 5k race course had, at maximum, a 10
foot change in elevation over the whole course which made for some
speedy times (PR for the author). The weather for the race was fair
for a Thursday evening in early July with temperatures hanging around
80 degrees and moderate humidity.

The course started one block from the town square and followed a
pretty straightforward loop finishing right in front of the town
square. The race started on-time with the walkers starting shortly
after the runners. Youth prevailed in the battle for first in the
running race as Ed Tullius (24) won with a time of 16:11. The second
finisher was Richard Hall (55) in a nice time of 16:46, followed by
Eric O'Brien (26) at 17:02, Marc Seamon (27) at 17:28, and Mitch
Rodello (33) at 17:40. In addition the overall winners, trophies were
handed out to the first two places in each age category for both male
and female as well as a trophy for the first place Special Olympian.
The first place walker was the Terry Whitecotton.
Participants were treated to music by the band Rising Fast
and refreshments after the race. Proceeds of the race went to the
Brooke High School Cross Country Team.
