Ken Beerbower on his way to recording the fastest 5K |
The course was in beautiful condition with a mixture of hills, fields, and wooded trails carved through the scenic Coonskin Park located on the outskirts of Charleston. The stage was set for the races that would decide who would qualify for the AAU National Championship and the USATF Regional Championship. The top twelve finishers in each of the age groups would be eligible to compete in these races.
The racing began at 10:00am with the Bantam Boys (10-Under) and Midget Girls (11-12) covering a distance of 3000 meters. The fastest girl in the group was Elizabeth Bruner, of Charleston, who crossed the line at 14:03.2. Jon Godwin, of Morgantown, recorded the overall fastest time with a 12:50.9. The next heat was for the Midget Boys (11-12) who also set out on the 3K course. Nick Dent, of Glenville, raced to the finish first in 11:34.2.
